In Depth: Straws

Straws in Numbers:

127: The number of school buses that could be filled by wasted straws every day.

100,000: The number of marine animals that die every day from ingesting plastic waste.

8 Billion: The number of straws thrown away annually in the UK.

2050: The year scientists predict there will be more plastic pieces in the ocean than fish.

4: The nominal amount in pounds sterling of our cheapest reusable straw set.

Awareness:

Plastic drinking straws first came into prominence after World War II due to the inexpensive nature of the materials.

Contrary to common misconceptions, plastic straws never decompose. They are normally non-recyclable due to contamination from the liquids that they touch and thus they commonly end up being a large contributor of ocean waste.

Recognising the environmental impact and damage caused by plastic straws, the EU, Canada and other government bodies have banned or targeted banning them, with some countries starting the ban as early as 2019.

So what are the solutions?

At Jungle Culture we think the solution is reusable straws. Both stainless steel and bamboo are reusable thousands, if not tens of thousands of times. They are easily stored in our jute pouches and all of them are dishwasher safe. Our packs start at £3.99. Try them once and we promise you will never switch back.
